As mentioned in our last newsletter Dr.Stonehocker, his wife Glenda, and assistants Laurie and Jen travelled to Honduras in Central America to do charity dentistry. The group consisted of 25 people : 6 dentists, 2 hygienists, 4 assistants and 13 trusty helpers all organized through the group Kindness in Action which is based out of Alberta.

Each day we travelled by school bus to a new village with our many tubs of supplies and thoughts of anticipation as to what the day would bring. What we found was a crowd of smiling faces young and old waiting for our help. And that is exactly what we did. On average we saw approximately 125 patients per day. It became clear to us that many people had been living in pain for a very long time, some receiving dental care for the first time in their lives, as their villages are quite remote.

We worked long days in conditions that we are not accustomed to here in Canada. There was a power outage on our last day which limited our abilities, but did allow us to extract a record number of teeth! Not only were people relieved of their pain- they were all sent home with a toothbrush and some small gift.

As well our team was involved in teaching the school children proper homecare. Unfortunately many of the people chew on the sugarcane as a snack so we tried to educate them on the negative effects of sugar on their teeth.

We were also able to distribute pencils, paper, markers, and scribblers etc. which the schools are in great need of. Each day is struggle for many in a third world country and most have very few worldly possessions, but to our surprise everyone we met had smile and were so grateful for our help. Our mission was to provide our skills and offer compassion to those in Honduras, but what we found is they gave us so much more in return. We are so thankful to have been part of such an amazing experience.
