Composite fillings are more than just "aesthetically pleasing".
Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth which restores most of the strength back to its original and healthy state. Traditional amalgam (also known as silver fillings) weaken the tooth, making it more susceptible to breaking. With composites, the appearance of the tooth is natural looking. These white fillings have no embarrasing dark grey spots for others to see.
Also, teeth that have been restored with white fillings are less sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. Composite fillings are not subject to shrinking and cracking over time like the old amalgams. And they don't require as much of the natural tooth to be removed before placement. This means that you end up with a stronger, healthier and more natural tooth than you would with traditional amalgam fillings. |
